WOVEN: A Residential Dance Retreat where Embodied Nature Connection meets Contact Improvisation, 4.5 days (Wed Sept 18th – Sun Sept 22nd)

We are excited to return with our second and now longer Woven retreat, weaving together passions for a deep nature connection, somatic practice of Contact Improvisation, and community.

Our focus at Woven is awareness and connection. Through previous retreats we’ve found our being relates more deeply to nature when somatically informed. We also notice that through nature connection our awareness heightens and our dances deepen. Tuning in to the group, the land and our bodies we’ll connect and investigate these threads and crossovers.

At this retreat some sessions will be in a studio, with others by the sea and in the bush. Over the days there will be several jams. There will also be solo time, witnessing and other constellations and offers. There will be less time for CI dancing than “usual” CI retreats where CI is the only focus.

In small groups and the wider village we’ll find ways in which we are supported and nurtured. We also all have a role in caring for others and the collective.

We welcome people with at least some experience of the CI form, who are comfortable to navigate through open frames, and who are curious to explore beyond the walls of the studio.

TECHNIQUE + HEART

How do we keep our dancing fresh? Contact Improvisation offers so much freedom and yet it is easy to get stuck in habits or lost in what we think the dance “should” be. In this workshop we have 2.5 days to explore moving with a sense of ease in body and mind, feeling more connected to your self and your partner, allowing emotional resonance, finding flow. From this space we will challenge our bodies to find new pathways, moving the dance beyond the familiar. Work with “upside down” material like handstands or hanging and sliding down with the head first will encourage us to move off the beaten tracks and become more skilled in the richness of detail. In my experience it is the combination of precision and heart that lets me find more variety in the dancing, more sense of journey and exploration – and a more alive jam space.

The workshop welcomes people who have a sense of the basics of CI and wish to go further and deeper. And, as always, long term practitioners will appreciate working within limitations and the brilliant principles of the form to find new exploration and discovery. Plus I’ll be sharing some language and phrasing I have been exploring in my teaching to help students find the heart in their practice, without losing the skill.

What a special time of the year! This gap after the Christmas and New Year’s busyness, before normal life kicks in again. A good time to acknowledge how and where we are, getting more deeply in touch with ourselves through being in touch with others. What would I like to invite in, what can I let go off?

What emerges when we give our bodies, minds and hearts space to move, connect and play? More being than doing with a sense of timelessness.

Contact Improvisation will be our main language with a curiosity on how movements and connections begin. Basic techniques and priciples of the form around leading & following, sharing weight and probably some lifts will anchor our journey.

Beginners are welcome! You need to be comfortable to move between floor & standing and interested in acknowledging your limits.

Residential CI Retreat on the Chiemsee near Munich

I am very happy to come back to the Frauenkloster Chiemsee after this wonderful Weekend Retreat we had in December 2023. I loved the spaciousness and also the depth of inquiries and connections that emerged. Next year, February 13-16th 2025, we want to expand the sense of journeying together for another day.

The theme is still forming and will be announced once it has matured.
My general approach won’t change though. It has a strong somatic base including developmental movement patterns, work with the elasticity of the fascia and bringing awareness to the regulation of the nervous system.

We’ll have moments to indulge into delicious details, befriend awkwardnesses, nibble at the edges of our comfort zone, and again and again move into open spaces to journey through in unpredictable ways. I am realising more and more strongly that the depth of our individual experiences is dependent on how we invest in the connections that make us feel part of group. My work will support that.
And a promise, as always: We will dance a lot!

Participants should be solidly familiar with Contact Improvisation principles and technique (intermediate- advanced level); and find their way in an open workshop structure. In case of doubt, check in with us.

Participants are responsible for their own insurance & liability.

Times: Thursday, 5 pm-7 pm, Friday & Saturday 10 am- 5.30 pm, Sunday, 10 am – 4 pm

Place: Monastery Frauenwörth, 83256 Fraueninsel, Chiemsee, Germany

Fee: €270-310 (depending on financial possibility) when applying until 13.12.24; thereafter €290-350

Accommodation in the monastery:

· Category A, room with shower/toilet, lake view, single room 65 € per night, double room 55 € per person and night.

· Category B, room with shower/toilet, courtyard view, single room 55 € per night, double room 45 € per person and night.
