Due to the Corona Virus situation we had to cancel this Workshop, we are super sorry! But we want to make it happen at a later point, when meeting, dancing and connecting with groups is possible again!
Contact Improvisation is an amazing frame to experience how being independent & self sufficient supports a sense of connectedness. On a physical level we’ll explore how all bodyparts can find more freedom and responsiveness, while being elasticly connected to the center of the body. From somatic based work that nurtures our solo we’ll research how we are connected to others and the group as a whole and eventually how to create Jams that are more than just a collection of closed off duets.
On the other hand we’ll work on committed, weightsahring duets with some specific Contact-technical input. A question in the background will be how we can stay independent in these physically strongly connected dances and how to create more breathing and choice-making space to feed the improvisational mind, that makes us feel alive.
And we will dance a lot!
People should have some basic experience in CI and weight sharing situations

Due to the Corona Virus situation we had to cancel this Workshop, we are super sorry!
But we want to make it happen at a later point, when meeting, dancing and connecting with groups is possible again!
I wish to have two essential poles of our CI practice more alive and available: the contact body, that is responsive to touch & weight everywhere & anytime, allowing a weight sharing duet that builds up physical & emotional trust for subtleties & risk taking. And on the other side an improvisation mind that enjoys the complexity of the wider surrounding for intuitive and compositional choice making. I am longing to see the self-sufficiency of soloing, committed CI duets, fearless trio work and the whole group as an intelligent organism.
We will explore moving bodywork as an improvisational journey, where many compositional aspects are tangible and which brings the body into its full CI capacity. We’ll explore how the improvisation mind can develop in this bodywork and survive in CI situations, soloing and more complex situations.
Especially trios I’d love to explore a bit more, since I found ways to make them more easily accessible. And they open us up beyond the familiarity of a CI duet.
We will definitely dance a lot!!

Embodiment and Improvisation as a base for cultural change
We love the light hearted & minded spirit that has been developed on this festival within the last 11 years. We want to continue our dedication for focussed movement-research and improvised dancing within the frame of Contact Improvisation and related contemporary dance forms.
cmc wants to acknowledge the dramatic challenges that are about to change our lives through climate change. We believe that somatic practices, which support embodiment and calmness, will be a key for the necesarry cultural change and so is the general ability to improvise, to compose together with what we have, consciously and intuitively.
We want to dive into our familiar practices through classes that offer CI-skills, contemporary dance techniques, somatic approaches and improvisational tools. Many formats will suport a mode of more self directed research. Our beloved interactive lectures will feed the mind with new perspectives. And in the Jams we will celebrate the dance together. Within all that we’d like to include an awareness that we are connected to a world, that needs our somatic and improvisational knowledge.
As usual cosy corners support the needs to rest. Organic food from our fabulous cook Lorén will nurture us physically. A park and a public ecological pool closeby add a summer feeling to our festival.
A team of around 25 international teachers will support and inspire this festival.

Dear dancing ones,
2-weeks Summer Intensive in Contact Improvisation
with Joerg Hassmann, 17-28 August 2020, Berlin
We will dive into detailed sensing and researching connections within our bodies. We will wonder what it is that makes us feel in touch with ourselves, with a dance partner, and as an independent, yet connected part of the whole group.
CI technique will offer scenarios to research these questions and specific themes will naturally emerge in the meeting of our curiosities. I imagine time & timing as one red thread of these two weeks. How long can I stay interested in a certain topic? When do new topics pop up? When am I ready to let go of ‘going step by step’ and instead leap into the world of open possibilities? We will practice allowing slowness and surprisingly quick changes.
The Summer Intensive is a journey of two weeks that we undertake individually and also together as a group. This makes different kinds of learning and growing possible than in shorter formats. I am grateful to still be able to share this format here in Europe while living on the other side of the planet.
Participants should feel very familiar with CI. We will ask about your dance and movement background upon registration.

12th Half-Year Programme in Contact Improvisation (Sep 2020 – Jan 2021)
with Daniel Werner & Joerg Hassmann
in Cooperation with Tanzfabrik Berlin
In the last eleven years this Programme became the setting, where we continuously evaluate the technical foundation of contact Improvisation as we understand and experience it. What is it that makes us feel connected – wihin ourselves and with the people we dance with? We see this as a core question for any dance technique, first of all on the physical but also on an energetic level.
Developmental movement patterns have become our experiental narrative for this, including the research of anatomical core structures like bones, joints and muscles. They offer effortless and powerful ways to move alone and together within all the weight baring situations of a CI duet.
Over the years more knowledge of somatic practices have inspired us -especially the connectivity and elasticity of fascia system – and different parts of the nervous system, that influence our state of readiness and availability.
We developed a lot of partner material to explore the main priciples, which enable a CI duet to move smoothly and easefully through all spacial levels, from the floor to lifts and jumps. We’ll research the most common CI specific situations, finding precision, new details & clarity, challenges and surprisingly new options in the supposedly known.
Focussed, open frames for dancing will give space to allow the technical information to become more integrated. In these spaces we can explore, what Jams need so that they can grow beyond a collection of CI duets. A Jam’s potential is to become a space, where we connect together as a whole while being deeply in touch with our individual needs and curiosities.
We are wondering more and more, which offer our common somatic practice can provide for our individual lives but also for our society, in a world that is facing dramatic changes.
One year of regular CI practice is a good minimum to participate in this programme.
The teaching language is mainly english, plus german as needed.
