Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance form based on the physical principles of touch, momentum, shared weight, and following a shared point of contact.
The form was founded in 1972 by Steve Paxton, integrating his background as a modern dancer and his studies in the martial art form Aikido.
CI plays with all the ways we can contact with another person or the floor…rolling, sliding, mutual balance, the mechanics of lifting others and being lifted and even how to fall.
The interplay between dance and touch is a powerful somatic practice and the shifting points of balance creates new cognitive learning.
It can be healing and liberating to allow your whole body to experience touch in a creative dance form.
